A higher-dimensional universe in which the space-time can be viewed as the direct product of R exp 1 x S exp d x S exp D is described. The energy-momentum tensor employed portrays a mixture of relativistic and nonrelativistic particles out of thermodynamical equilibrium such that there is a bulk viscosity term. It is shown that the scale factor of noncompact space is a monotonic increasing function of time, and that this scale factor is driven to expand rapidly near the time where the cosmic factor of the compact space is zero. It is shown, without actually solving the Einstein equations, that the scale factor of noncompact space is a monotonic increasing function of time, and that if the sale factor of compact space reaches a maximum at a certain time, then noncompact space is driven to expand rapidly, which indicates the possibility of solving the horizon problem.
