The characteristics of large-scale (greater than 50 km) and small-scale (less than 50 km) Birkeland currents determined from spacecraft observations are described. The poleward side and equatorial side flow pattern and density balances for large-scale Birkeland currents are examined; the relationship between large-scale Birkeland current flow patterns and IMF orientation is investigated. The presence of Birkeland currents correlates with observations of auroral emissions. The importance of the currents to coupling between the magnetosphere and polar ionosphere is analyzed.
