Superstring theory has now been recognized as a prime candidate for a unification of space-time and matter. However, much regarding the nature of string dynamics has not yet been adequately understood. For example, there exists currently no satisfactory formulation which is independent of the background space-time, and no explicit local space-time symmetry is known for the full-fledged string field theories. In the present letter, it is shown that the light-cone string field theory of the bosonic closed string possesses invariance under a class of local space-time coordinate transformations. The significance of the obtained results is evaluated.
