The open model of the magnetosphere requires that the magnetic flux in the geomagnetic tail decrease at least linearly with increasing downstream distance. The length scale of this minimum uniform gradient is the tail length, estimated to be of the order of 1000 earth radii. The distant tail data from ISEE 3, contrary to earlier reports, are fully consistent with the existence of such a gradient.
