Having derived coupled equations for the wave action, vertical wavenumber and mean flow associated with vertically propagating, two-dimensional and onlinear internal gravity waves, assuming that the inverse of the vertical wavenumber is small compared to the scale height, wave shape is determined by extending the solution to the next order in the small parameter. It is found that wave steepening is the dominant nonlinear modification of the wave shape, and that wave tilting or overturning is essentially unaffected by nonlinearity. Attention is given to the significance of this result for the breakdown of internal waves in the middle atmosphere.
