The big bang with infinite initial density can be replaced by an event in which matter is produced from empty Minkowski space. This can be done for spatially flat and open (k = 0, -1) Friedmann/Robertson/Walker models, and the latter is treated in most detail. If the scale factor of the model grows with time like S = t+αe-β/t (where α, β are constants), the density starts from zero, rises to a maximum and then declines, the equation of state tending to that of radiation. This may be an acceptable model for the early universe.
