NICKNAMES are seldom exhilarating or welcome, especially when intended
to be contemptuous, so the question raised on p. 553 (NATURE, October
16), whether Prof. Richet can rightly be bracketed with Crookes and
Lodge as a `spiritist,' seems a barren one, but it may be used as a peg
for some general remarks.
