It is pointed out that comets can be regarded as natural probes which pass through the entire interplanetary space from the solar corona to the limits of the solar sphere of influence. Comets can also be regarded as remnants of the interstellar gas and dust cloud from which the sun and the planets were formed. Attention is given to the number of comets, their orbits, the effects of nongravitational forces and aspects of material loss, the icy conglomerate model of the cometary nucleus, cometary atmospheres, and cometary tails consisting of gas and of dust. Effects of radiation pressure and solar wind are considered along with questions regarding cometary tail structure and orientation. Aspects concerning the origin of cometary nuclei are also examined.
