The geomagnetic lunar daily variation, and the solar daily variation, have been recently analysed by Malin. The response measurements that he obtained are used here to investigate the radial distribution of electrical conductivity in the upper mantle. It is found that these observed response measurements require low conductivity in the mantle, at least as far down as 650 km from the surface. This result is compatible with the conductivity models determined by the quiet-day daily variation, and so justifies the use of these variation fields for geomagnetic deep sounding.
