A quantitative evaluation is made of binary asteroids' long-term stability through both gravitational encounters with passing asteroids and various physical conditions. When bodies are comparatively small, the lifetimes of asteroidal binaries are found to be limited by disruptive collisions; gravitational encounters tend to be less important. For systems whose separation is not greater than a few tens of the primarys radius, typical lifetimes are noted to be comparable to, or greater than, the solar system's age.
