REE cycling in the Black Sea occurs at the oxic/suboxic interface, not at the interface with anoxic waters as has been reported previously. REE cycling in the Black Sea is associated with the redox cycling of Mn and not that of Fe. This is a characteristic feature of all anoxic basins so far investigated. REE scavenging by both Mn and Fe oxides occurs in the oceans, but Mn mobility precedes that of Fe in anoxic basins with suboxic zones; thus, the observed REE-Mn association is produced.
