Ionospheric current loops which generate solar-diurnal variations of the geomagnetic field are shown to be due to the interaction of sunlight with excited O2(-) ions formed during collisions between electrons and O2 molecules. The ionospheric-dynamo theory does not have to be introduced to explain this conclusion. This interaction can explain the origin of ionospheric currents flowing in polar regions from the night side to the day side.
