The characteristics of the radiation of extragalactic origin are examined, taking into account the possible effects of an interstellar radiation-absorbing matter. Remaining radiation effects from the big-bang explosion which started the universe are considered and studies concerning the existence of a radiation which is black-body in its spectral character and isotropically distributed on the sky are discussed. Attention is given to the significance of a number of discoveries regarding the X-ray and gamma-ray background.
