The paper considers the problem of determining the spectra of stars whose photospheres are characterized by scattering of radiation as well as by true absorption. It is assumed that the ratio between the true-absorption factor and the scattering factor depends on depth. The intensity of radiation emerging from the photosphere is expressed in terms of a function that was previously introduced to solve the problem of diffuse reflection of light by an inhomogeneous medium. Special attention is given to the case where the single-scattering albedo decreases exponentially with optical depth, and numerical values are tabulated for auxiliary quantities in terms of which the unknown radiation intensity can be expressed. It is shown that the results can be applied to the photospheres of hot as well as cold stars, where scattering is due to free electrons and molecules, respectively.
