The SXT is an enhanced soft X-ray telescope with a bandpass of 0.2 - 10 keV. The optic is a multilayer coated, conical approximation to Wolter 1 geometry with a 2 m focal length and is provided by SAO. It focuses X-rays onto a CCD focal plane camera provided by PSU/UL. TIFR will provide he optical bench and telescope tube. The SXT will complement the other instruments on ASTROSAT: LAXPC (Large Area Xenon filled Proportional Counters), CZTI (coded aperture mask with a CZT Imaging detector array), SSM (Scanning Sky Monitor coded aperture position sensitive proportional counter) and UVIT (2 UV Imaging Telescopes). The ASTROSAT mission will make wide band spectroscopy and timing studies of a wide variety of astrophysical targets. The mission will consist of a 6 month UV and X-ray survey that will be followed by a planned 30 months of pointed observations.
