The generation of mean magnetic fields by an 'alpha-omega' dynamo is studied in the geometry of an oblate spheroid. Applied to the galaxy, the model has the steady quadrupolar (even) mode as the most easily excited mean field, in agreement with results obtained by Parker (1971) from a plane parallel model. However, oscillatory modes, which were reported by Parker (1971) to occur under similar excitation conditions, exist in the present model only at substantially larger dynamo numbers.
