The paper examines the question of the dimensions of penumbral filaments, which are believed (Zhou et al., 1990) to be formed from the development of unstable perturbation modes in the magnetic field of penumbral electric current. Using the short wave approximation, the nonadiabatic dispersion equation is solved in the radial and the transverse directions of the sunspot, and the length and width of a penumbral filament are evaluated from the condition of instability. From the results of the analysis it is concluded that the penumbral filaments are a feature of the sunspot magnetic flow under gravity and that the presence of the filaments implies the existence of a twisted magnetic field.
