Recent high-resolution H-alpha observations of solar flares and flare-productive active regions are reviewed. Two types of two-ribbon flares, separating and confined two-ribbon flares, are discussed. Temporal relationships between H-alpha line intensities or profiles and hard X-ray or microwave emissions are examined. It is suggested that the production of a major flare may require the successive emergence of a twisted magnetic flux rope.
