Between X-rays of 100 eV which can penetrate only a few hundred light years through the interstellar medium, to the highest energy cosmic rays from the distant reaches of the Universe, lie sixty octaves of discovery space to complement the single octave of visible light we perceive directly. This year marks the 90th anniversary of the discovery of cosmic rays and the 40th anniversay of the detection of the first extrasolar X-ray source. There are currently two major X-ray Observatories for the 0.1-10 keV band in orbit, and several major facilities for higher energies under construction. I will review recent developments in the field, and discuss the outstanding questions we seek to answer in exploring the high energy Universe. Topics will include the physics of neutron stars and our quest for constraints on the equation of state for matter at supranuclear densities, the signals we receive from within a few Schwarschild radii of supermassive black holes, the role of hot gas in the ecology of galactic systems, and the search for the repository of most of the baryons in the Universe in the million-degree gas of intergalactic space.
