Since 1995 about 80 giant planets orbiting Sun-like stars have been discovered. I will review the general trends in this database and discuss the possible implications for our understanding of planet formation and evolution. Particular attention will be given to the peculiar composition of the planet hosting stars with respect to the general field star population.
