The efficiency of a phase-conjugation pulsed adaptive optical system (AOS) is evaluated with the response time of the control system taken into account. Expressions are obtained for the structure function and the control error variance in the steady-state operating regime of the AOS. The pulse characteristics of the control-system drives, the response functions of the phase corrector, and the weighting matrix of the AOS are optimized. The capabilities of AOSs with a sectional controlled mirror and a multichannel Hartmann sensor of the tracking and nontracking types are investigated.
