We study the problem of assigning a frequency spectrum to the Casimir energy. We introduce two types of families of spectral weight or window functions, with which the spectrum is deffined. In one of the types a spectral weight function has a width proportional to the central position of its peak, and in the other a constant width. The frequency spectrum turns out to depend on the type and shape of the chosen spectral weight function not only quantitatively but also qualitatively. Thus it is impossible to assign an intrinsic spectrum at least with the help of a spectral weight function.
