We review recent work on the spherical gravitational collapse of a perfect fluid with heat flow but without viscosity. Since heat is flowing across the boundary of the collapsing sphere the exterior space cannot be considered as vacuum, and matching to Schwarzchild spacetime is not suitable. The matching has to be carried out to a Vaidya spacetime, and a consequence of this is that the pressure of the fluid at the boundary is not zero.
Several detailed model of stars undergoing this type of collapse are described; those in chapters and 4 and 5 are exact solutions of Einstein's equations, and those in chapter 6 are approximate. Results about luminosity and effective adiabatic index are described, and illustrated graphically.
