A detailed study of photochemical processes in the D-region is used to obtain analytical expressions for the effective production rates of positive binding ions (Cb1+ and Cb2+) depending on the meteorological parameters of the ionosphere as well as on the rate of its ionization. A simplified model of the ionization-recombination cycle shows that the production efficiency of the positive binding ions in the NO(+) channel depends strongly on the ionization rate.
