Magneto-variational measurements made sequentially over a region can, in theory, be used to generate contour maps of the field that would result in response to a given primary field. If the region contains a two-dimensional conducting body these synoptic fields can be obtained fairly easily by using the Kertz operator. They can then be interpreted in terms of the corresponding underground current flow by inversion of a matrix.
