The salient features of the 6-m Bolshoi Teleskop Azimutal'ny (BTA) are described together with the results of three nights of observations conducted in December 1990. The BTA, which entered regular use in 1976, is situated at an altitude of 6800 feet on the northern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains near Mineral'nye Vody, a site which is often in the turbulent downwind wake of nearby peaks higher up in the Caucasus range; when the wind exceeds about 45 km/hr, it degrades the seeing and introduces pointing restrictions. The telescope itself is an altazimuth reflector whose 6-m-diam primary mirror has a focal ratio of f/4. Instruments ride either in a large prime-focus cabin or on one of the two Nasmyth platforms that top the azimuth fork. The observations reported here include images obtained by simultaneous sampling many points in a rectangular field, including a view of NGC 2782 and a portion of the galaxy south of the nucleus showing strong emission from doubly ionized oxygen atoms, thought to indicate the location of shocked gas in an outflowing wind.
