The projects of space astrometry should yield an important improvement in trigonometric parallaxes for a very large number of stars. Three points are emphasized: (1) the limiting apparent magnitude will be much larger, the measurements of trigonometric parallaxes will then extend even to the coldest stars and allow calibrations for all types of stars; (2) the parallax measurements should allow us to reach larger distances from the sun; and (3) many more stars will be measured. This project could therefore provide statistically reliable samples of stars to be used for any calibration based on trigonometric parallaxes.
