The author points out the difficulties encountered in matching efficiently a very large telescope with a high dispersion spectrograph. After analysing the advantages and disadvantages of the very large grating, the mosaic grating, the superwidth grating and the image slicer, the author mentions the MMT and its analogy. He calls all these as sub-aperture methods. Then he introduces a new way, the sub-aperture adaptive optics-optical fiber system after the primary, and analyses its advantages and disadvantages.
