A time-dependent mathematical model of the earth's plasmasphere and ionosphere is employed to investigate the field-aligned flows of H(+) and He(+) in the topside ionosphere during solar maximum. Two sets of model results are presented: the first set is taken from a day when the flux tube has low content, while the second set is taken from a day when the day-to-day change in flux-tube content is small. These flux-tube contents are illustrative of poststorm conditions and magnetically-quiet periods, respectively.
