It is shown that the photoionization of sodium constitutes a significant source of metallic ions in the twilight D-region. Extraterrestrial dust is believed to be the source of origin of sodium and, possibly, also of potassium atoms, while a meteoritic origin is assumed for Ca and Al atoms. It is pointed out that, because of these relations, variations in the extraterrestrial dust influx should have a great effect on twilight D-region ionization phenomena.
