An investigation involving the construction of an automatic radio beacon was conducted in order to obtain more systematic information regarding certain results obtained by Crawford et al. (1970). Crawford et al. had reported that the received echoes were shifted in frequency by up to 100 Hz and that the time interval between the pulses was compressed by up to 50 per cent. The design of the experiment is discussed along with questions of beacon sensitivity. In the investigation no echoes were received of a strength sufficient to trigger the tape recorder.
