The investigation reported confirms the results obtained by Gupta (1966) who initiated a frequency domain study of lines in the geomagnetic spectrum. On the basis of the investigation it is concluded that the residuals between Gupta's line frequencies and those predicted by tidal theory are too small to be explained solely by an amplitude modulation mechanism. An explanation of the observations requires both lunar tides and amplitude modulation. The contribution of amplitude modulation becomes increasingly effective at high latitudes.
