Scientific paper

The paper examines the nature and the origin of the planetary nebulae and their place in stellar evolution. These fluorescent clouds of gas represent one of the final stages in the evolution of sunlike stars, several tens of thousands of years before the star becomes a naked dense remnant known as white dwarf. The many discoveries about the physics of planetary nebulae that helped astronomers to understand stellar evolution are discussed.
