It is shown that the upward splitting of the ionospheric F-region which
is observed in the vicinity of the geomagnetic equator is probably
controlled by the latitudinal gradients of the electron density. Thise
gradient causes the inhomogeneities of the plasma diffusion flux
transversal to the geomagnetic field (i.e. the splitting of the jets).
