Solar coronal loops are considered as regions of localized current flows, in order to investigate the consequences of current confinement. The physical and observational bases for this assumption are presented, and it is shown that a proper choice of the current profile permits the quantitative treatment of loop equilibrium structure along with MHD and resistive stability properties. Regions of absolute stability against ideal kink modes are found, and explicit growth rates for the tearing-mode instability are computed. The possible relevance of other resistive effects is considered, and an outline is given of the importance of the small-scale geometry of the magnetic field outlined.
