The detection of the neutron star underlying the remnant of SN 1987A on January 18, 1989 is reported. Data on SN 1987A obtained with a 4-m telescope with a Si photodiode at the Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory between January, 1988 and January, 1989 are reviewed, including the computer methods used in the observations. Graphs are presented of the first three harmonics of PSR 1987A, as detected by Fourier transform, the pulsed signal due to the second harmonic of PSR 1987A, the orbital wobble of the position of PSR 1987A caused by the planetary companion, and the pulse profile of PSR 1987A as reconstructred from the measured amplitudes and phases of the 0.5-ms period and its second and third harmonics. Consideration is given to the theoretical significance of the discovery.
