Ultra low frequency wave activity near L = 4 and its diurnal variations are examined in relation to upstream interplanetary parameters. Ground-based magnetometer data were recorded at Pittsburg, New Hampshire (L approximately 3.5) for 28 days during July and August 1975, analyzed to obtain hourly magnetic energies per unit volume in three frequency bands, and compared with solar wind velocity and density, interplanetary magnetic field component, interplanetary field cone angle, kinetic energy flux density and interplanetary epsilon measurements obtained by the IMP J spacecraft. The ground magnetic energy variations are generally observed to exhibit higher power levels for the lower frequency fluctuations, with power level enhancements appearing at different local times on different days. Dayside and nightside ground hourly magnetic energies are generally found to correlate best with the solar wind kinetic energy flux density, with the highest linear correlation coefficients found between the power and the kinetic energy flux density and solar wind velocity during local afternoon. It is concluded that different interplanetary source mechanisms contribute to dayside ground power in different frequency bands.
