JäNECKE1 and Lester Smith2 have described systems of four non-metallic liquid layers in equilibrium. Hildebrand3 has recently obtained a system of five non-metallic layers (heptane, aniline, water, perfluorokerosene and supercooled phosphorus) and two metallic layers (gallium and mercury). A more easily obtained (and safer) system with five stable non-metallic layers is described below.
