We study the tidal interaction between a supermassive black hole and a star. The brightening of an accretion disk around a supermassive black hole as a consequence of the tidal disruption of the star is investigated with the Newtonian α-disk model, although relativistic effects are expected to be substantial. A large mass, 108-109 Msolar, for the supermassive black hole is required to produce possible optical flares on time scales of a few years. The numerical results imply that only a few percent of the mass of a disrupted star forms a very thin layer of accretion disk outside the marginally stable orbit. We suggest that the formation of such a thin disk could be interesting for producing potentially observable optical thermal flares with characteristic time scales on the order of a few years.
