The Press-Schechter formalism is used to derive the mass function of galaxy clusters. The author considers a typical double inflation perturbation spectrum in the standard CDM model leading to a hierarchical clustering scenario. Normalising the amplitude to the COBE-quadrupole, and supposing a biasing b ≍ 2, the author obtains a reasonable fit both to the amplitude and to the slope of the X-ray temperature function. In the considered model the cluster abundance diminishes strongly with redshift.
