The interaction of interstellar pick up ions with the termination shock introduces the possibility of dissipation mechanisms that are distinct from those of shocks found much closer to the sun. We will discuss both the quasi-perpendicular and quasi-parallel regions of the heliospheric termination shock and determine approximate forms of the downstream proton distribution. This is of particular importance in relating the energetic neutral atom (ENA) distribution observed at Earth using IBEX observations, and introduces the possibility of using observations to constrain and study the microphysics of the termination shock. Besides the generation of the downstream proton distribution, the termination shock serves to determine much of the character of the waves and turbulence found in the inner heliosheath. We will discuss why waves and turbulence observed in the inner are very different from that observed upstream in the supersonic wind. Finally, if time permits, we will discuss the nature of turbulence in the outer heliosheath. This has become of topic of increasing interest and important in view of the IBEX observation of the “ribbon.” The currently most widely accepted explanation relies on assuming that the outer heliosheath is relatively quiescent in terms of pre-existing and excited turbulence. This assumption will be examined on the basis of several turbulence models and simulations.
