This paper shows that by detailed modelling of the velocity and space
distribution of samples of proper motion stars one can obtain
information on the luminosity function of old stellar populations in the
Galaxy. The importance of this method for the problems of the inital
mass function and the "missing mass" in the Galaxy is emphasized.
