Scientific paper
he thermospheric densities derived from sensitive accelerometers on board spacecraft such as on the Challenging Minisatellite Payload (CHAMP) have identified a number of interesting density features, whose underlying physical mechanisms are not fully understood and thus not well incorporated into current general circulation modeling. For example, the CHAMP data at about 400 km suggest that the daytime density maxima are located at about ± 30 degree magnetic latitude instead at the geographic equator, which seems to indicate the connection to the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) and the electron temperature peaks (located slightly higher latitude of EIA) through plasma-neutral coupling. Several mechanisms (chemical heating, parallel ion-drag, or wind effects) have been suggested, however, none of them can fully explain the observations. In this study we attempt to investigate the cross-covariance structure of neutral density, and electron temperature/density by using CHAMP data, and to understand its magnetic latitude/local time variation in relationship to physical mechanisms acting under different geophysical conditions. Our analysis will be augmented by a comparison with Ionospheric Data Assimilation (IDA) 3D reconstruction of the electron density. Though numerical modeling, we will furthermore investigate the relative importance of competing mechanisms associated with plasma-neutral interaction.
