[2415] Ionosphere / Equatorial Ionosphere
Scientific paper
The Coupled Ion Neutral Dynamics Investigation (CINDI) onboard the Communications/Navigation Outage Forecast System (C/NOFS) satellite provides a unique opportunity to study in-situ ion drifts and densities during this extended solar minimum. The depth and extent of the present solar minimum enables a statistical analysis of ionospheric behavior largely free from the deviations caused by geomagnetic storms and variations in solar output. Various ionospheric behaviors are markedly different than observed during more typical solar conditions. In particular, the local time of irregularities, the magnitude of pre-dawn plasma drifts and the presence of the pre-reversal enhancement are strongly dependent upon solar ionizing flux. Ion drifts and densities in the equatorial ionosphere throughout the present minimum (2008-2010) will be presented.
