The flux tube volume (V), which is the volume of a flux tube with of unit magnetic flux, is an important parameter in the theory of magnetospheric plasma transport as it plays a role in determining the entropy PV5/3. A semi-empirical formula was developed by Wolf et al. [2006] for estimating flux tube volume from local spacecraft measurements in the magnetotail based on the linear Grad-Shafranov equation. In this presentation, we report results of initial flux tube volume estimates for geosynchronous orbit (GSO) that are based on a modification of the flux tube volume of a vacuum dipole due to finite plasma β effects. The estimate will be compared with calculated flux tube volumes derived from three dimensional equilibria generated by a magneto-friction code. Variations of the GSO flux tube volume as a function to geomagnetic activity levels and local times are also presented.
