The characteristic parameters of rapidly rotating polytropes have been calculated by analytical means, numerical techniques, and semianalytical approaches. The present investigation is concerned with the first application of the level surface theory, founded in 1743 by Clairaut, to rapidly rotating polytropes. The investigation has the objective to evaluate the precision of the third-order level surface theory for various values of the rotation parameter m, and to calculate the external shape and the critical rotation parameter, and compare the results with other calculations. In principle, the level surface theory can be extended to any desired degree of approximation, but the concrete application becomes time consuming because of the strongly increasing number in the series expansions.
