The launch of the NASA Space Shuttle results in the deposition of large amounts of water vapor in the lower thermosphere. The rapid transport of some water plumes towards Polar Regions and subsequent bursts of polar mesospheric clouds has been inferred from various ground-based and space-borne observations e.g. TIMED/GUVI, TIMED/SABER, and lidar. In this study the photochemistry and energetics within the water plume is simulated using the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIME-GCM). Effects of the shuttle plume on the local neutral temperature structure and local heating rates will be presented. The response of HOx, Ox, NOx, and O(1D) chemical heating to the plume will be discussed. In this paper, we identify the key chemical reactions in the atmosphere which are most significantly impacted by the plume deposition. We will show that the response of these reactions to the water plume drives temporary changes in the neutral temperature structure in the region of the plume. Model results of temperature variations will be compared with TIMED/SABER temperature profiles taken post shuttle-launch to elucidate the effects of the shuttle plume on MLT energetics.
