Specification of neutral gas heating rate from auroral electron precipitation is important for global modeling of the thermosphere. It is over 25 years since neutral gas heating by auroral electrons was last investigated and there has been significant improvement in ionospheric chemistry in the intervening years. This paper presents new calculations of the auroral electron neutral gas heating rate that is lower than earlier determinations. We also describe a new technique for parameterizing the thermosphere neutral gas heating rate.
