[2441] Ionosphere / Ionospheric Storms
Scientific paper
This paper presents statistical study of the storm-time ionospheric total electron content (TEC) disturbances at mid-, low- and equatorial-latitude ionosphere by using GPS-TEC observations along the East Asia and the America longitudes during ten-year period of 1999-2009. To investigate the significance of the magnetic storm effect in comparison with the day-to-day ionospheric variability, we perform the z-test analysis for moderate and major magnetic storm events. The storm events are further categorized into four onset local time periods to study the local time effect. Results shows that the storm effects are clearly identified at mid-latitudes in both longitudes, while the storm signatures are less distinguishable at the low-latitude and equatorial regions, indicating that the day-to-day TEC variability there are highly variable even without the storm effect. The positive storm effects appear mainly in the first two days (including the onset day) after onset, while the negative storm effects are seen after the second day and last for three to four days. Positive and negative effects of the major storms are clearly identified at all latitudes while the effects of the moderate storm at the low- and equatorial regions are less prominent.
