Auroral-zone riometers separated by over 80° of magnetic longitude show that features of the auroral radio absorption move eastward between 00.00 and 14.00 hr L.T. and westward between 14.00 and 24.00 L.T. The typical velocity is 4° of longitude/min, or 3.7 km/sec. A statistical study of the occurrence of reported absorption events leads to a similar, though not identical, pattern but indicates smaller velocities. In some examples the movement can be traced nearly half-way around the auroral zone, and when the stations are suitably placed it is possible to observe both the eastward and westward movements simultaneously. It is concluded that the typical auroral disturbance propagates around the Earth, beginning near the midnight meridian.
